Red Barron here! Hey guys, it has been some time since we have been able to get out on the water, but never fear, early Spring is here! With kids in sports and other family events, things can get pretty hectic, but taking time to get out and enjoy God’s creation always soothes the soul.
The weather was perfect, with a good chill in the morning, low winds, and beautiful sunny skies, a short reprieve from the overcast days of the last week. It wasn’t until late Friday night that I had decided to even go, so who else to call but John. After a stop on the way to the lake to learn that the driver side boat trailer bearing had blown out the seal, we made it to lake around 7:15AM. No tournaments this weekend, and traffic would be minimal with the fair weather fishers staying cozy in bed.
Getting on the water, we noticed surface temperature was hovering in the 54-55 degree Fahrenheit range. So bass would still be sluggish, but the early morning sun should bring them into the shallower depths to warm up. I know generic terms like “lipless crankbait” are preferred when referring to lures, but I’ve always known them as Rat-L-Traps. Definitely a good lure on a slow retrieval to seek out fish in these conditions.
Fish responded and I was able to bring in a white bass and a nice little largemouth bass.

With John running the net, I was able to bring in this beautiful bass that was hooked outside the mouth.

We enjoyed the day thoroughly, fishing, talking, riding all around the lake. We were even able to enjoy a couple of tasty burgers at the Stow-A-Way Marina restaurant!
